Is Clutch legit? Yes, with caveats agencies and buyers should know
By Jean Luc Poitier, SEO and growth marketing strategist · Clutch Reviews · Updated September 27, 2026 · Company records, Clutch's own terms, and 210 public reviews
Clutch isn't a scam. It's a real company that has run its B2B directory since 2013, and it says every review goes through an identity check and an editor before it's published.
The caveats are about how it makes money. Sponsors appear first on directory pages by default, the company "Verified" badge is a paid product, and paid plans lock agencies into 12 months with no early exit. Many of the harshest reviews come from agencies that paid and got few or poor leads, not from people who were defrauded.

Who runs Clutch
Clutch Co, LLC is based in Washington, DC. Its methodology page says it is independent, with founder Mike Beares as CEO, and not owned by any agency, advertiser, or provider on the platform. Technical.ly reported that it was primarily bootstrapped from its 2013 launch until 2020, when Susquehanna Growth Equity put in an $18 million Series A, its first venture capital. LinkedIn lists 51 to 200 employees.
How Clutch checks reviews
A reviewer has to sign in with LinkedIn, Google, or a company email, and Clutch says a human editor reads every review before it's published. Reviews that fail the identity check are rejected or published without a Verified badge. Clutch says it rejected 10% of submitted reviews in 2025 for signs of falsified information.
Firms that pay get an edge in two ways: sponsoring providers can have Clutch interview their clients online or by phone, and paid plans get faster review processing. Clutch's terms also say it may offer reviewers incentives, which "are not dependent on whether the review is positive or negative."
“I trust Clutch for evaluating any B2B professional services company. The client reviews are thorough and thoughtful, truly delving into specifics in a client engagement.”Jeremy D., Trustpilot (via Clutch's review link), April 2026
“A very bad review of my company was posted on the site, with logo and all details of my company correct. However the reviewer had never been a customer of my company.”Anne C., Trustpilot, June 2025
What Clutch's rankings do and don't show
Directory lists open in Clutch's default order: sponsored firms first, then Premier Verified, then Verified, then everyone else by Clutch Rank. Clutch's terms say sponsorship doesn't change a company's ranking, and a buyer who re-sorts by Clutch Rank sees the unsponsored order.
The company "Verified" badge is a paid product: Clutch Verified costs $499 a year and adds a credit check. It is separate from the Verified label on individual reviews, and the two are easy to confuse. A strong profile is a reason to call a firm, not a guarantee.
“We lost $210,000 with a software development company that we found through Clutch.co.”Tim S., Trustpilot, August 2024
Scams that use Clutch's name
Clutch's careers page warns that scammers have posed as its recruiters and made fraudulent job offers. It says real recruiters always do a phone screen, email from @clutch.co addresses, and never ask for payment for a job or an interview. Two Trustpilot reviewers describe paid "task" jobs offered in Clutch's name over Telegram and on a look-alike site; both asked them to deposit money first.
The verdict: legit, but read the contract
For buyers, Clutch is free and its reviews are harder to fake than most. Read the detailed reviews, check the Verified label on each one, and still call references. For agencies, the free profile is low risk. Before paying for Verified or sponsorship, read the plan comparison and the cancellation terms.
