How to get client reviews for your agency, without chasing
By Jean Luc Poitier, SEO and growth marketing strategist · Clutch Reviews · Updated September 27, 2026
B2B buyers read reviews before they take a first call, and the most useful ones name the project, the budget range, and what changed afterward. Most happy clients will write one if you ask at the right moment and make it quick. This guide covers the manual version first, then where Clutch fits if you'd rather have a third party run the process.
When to ask for a client review
Ask when the client has just seen a result: a launch, a campaign report with good numbers, a renewal, or an email where they thanked your team. Goodwill is highest then, and the details are fresh. Avoid asking in the middle of a problem or right before you send an invoice.
Make it easy to say yes
- One message, one link, and a date a week or two out.
- Send the questions in advance, and offer a short call instead of writing for clients who prefer to talk.
- Tell them what the platform will ask for, such as signing in or taking a verification call, so the extra steps don't surprise them.
- Follow up once. After that, move on to the next client.
Ask for specifics, not praise
A review that says what you did, for whom, over how long, and with what result is more believable than one that just says you were great. Useful prompts: what problem they hired you for, what you delivered, what changed, how the project was managed, and one thing you could have done better. That last question makes the praise credible.
“The reviews are verified by your clients and they ask for some depth so you can't just get away with a quick thoughtless comment.”Ket, Trustpilot, September 2023
Where agency reviews carry weight
| Compared on | Strength | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Your own site (case studies, testimonials) | Full control over the story and format | Buyers know you picked the quotes |
| LinkedIn recommendations | Comes from a real person's profile | They sit on individual profiles, not your company's |
| Google Business Profile | Shows up in local search and Maps | Google doesn't check that the reviewer was a client |
| Clutch | Identity check and an editor's read before publishing; buyers use it to shortlist | Slower to publish, with more steps for your client |
Figures checked against each company's published pages and review-platform listings as of 2026-09-27. “Not published” means the company does not publish that figure.
Don't buy or swap reviews
Paid and swapped reviews break the rules of every major review platform, and a buyer who spots one discounts the rest. Clutch says it rejected 10% of the reviews submitted in 2025 for signs of falsified information.
The shortcut: let Clutch run the review process
A free Basic profile on Clutch lets clients review you. Each reviewer signs in with LinkedIn, Google, or a company email, and Clutch says an editor reads the review before it goes live. Sponsoring providers can also have Clutch interview clients online or by phone. Clutch says processing usually finishes within five business days, and it currently warns that it may take longer.
Agencies describe both sides: buyers trust reviews that took effort to leave, but some clients drop off partway through. Warn clients about the steps and the verification call before you send the link.
“It is not easy to give a review on Clutch. Because it is not easy I know people mean what they are saying.”Steve S., Trustpilot, May 2024
“it's a little difficult to invite your clients to review your company on their site. Too many steps and most of the time they fail to approve the review from your clients.”Harrison, Trustpilot, May 2024

Client reviews FAQ
How do I ask a client for a review?+
Ask right after a result the client has already noticed, such as a launch or a renewal. Send one short message with a single link, a few specific questions, and a date, and offer a 15-minute call for clients who would rather talk than write.
How long does a Clutch review take to publish?+
Clutch says staff process reviews by hand, usually within five business days, and it currently warns this may take longer. Verified and sponsored profiles get faster processing.
Should an agency pay for reviews?+
No. Paid or swapped reviews break the rules of every major review platform, and they get caught: Clutch says it rejected 10% of submitted reviews in 2025 for signs of falsified information.
Where should a B2B agency collect reviews?+
Use more than one place. Case studies on your own site tell the full story, a checked third-party profile such as Clutch gives buyers a source they don't have to take on trust, and Google reviews help if you sell locally.
